The Weather in Asturias: Bring an Umbrella… and a Sense of Humor

If you’re thinking about visiting (or living in) Asturias, northern Spain’s green jewel, there’s one topic you’ll hear about immediately: the weather. Not the beaches, not the cider, not the dramatic cliffs—no, the weather gets top billing. And honestly? It deserves it.

Asturian weather is best described as enthusiastically unpredictable. Locals don’t really check the forecast so much as negotiate with it. You might wake up to blue skies, leave the house in a light jacket, get rained on by lunchtime, and enjoy a golden sunset by dinner—all without leaving the same village.

Rain: The Unofficial Mascot

Yes, it rains. Let’s not dance around it. Asturias is lush, green, and breathtaking for a reason, and that reason is water—lots of it. The rain here isn’t usually dramatic or tropical; it’s more like a persistent drizzle that feels emotionally invested in your plans.

But here’s the key thing: life does not stop for rain in Asturias. Not even a little. People keep walking, shopping, meeting for coffee, and sitting outside under awnings like nothing is happening. Rain is not an event—it’s just a background setting.

A Culture Built for Rain (and Umbrellas)

Asturias is so prepared for rain that it’s honestly impressive. There are actual umbrella stores—and not just one—selling umbrellas sturdy enough to survive wind, rain, and possibly minor emotional trauma.

Go into shops, restaurants, or cafés, and you’ll often find a designated place to leave your umbrella at the entrance. In shopping centers (centros comerciales), there are even plastic bags provided to cover your umbrella, so you don’t drip politely all over the floor. It’s organized. It’s efficient. It’s very Asturian.

Of course, this system assumes you remember your umbrella when you leave. I… do not always. I have personally donated several umbrellas to the greater good of Asturias. It is, without question, a learned habit—and one that comes with a small but ongoing budget for umbrella replacements.

Four Seasons in One Day (No Extra Charge)

Asturias doesn’t really believe in rigid seasons. Spring feels like a shy suggestion. Summer is lovely… when it shows up. Autumn is gorgeous but moody. Winter is mild, rarely extreme, and occasionally sunny just to confuse everyone.

A classic Asturian summer day might include:

  • A cool morning that feels suspiciously like October

  • A warm, sunny afternoon is perfect for the beach

  • A sudden cloud takeover around 5 p.m.

  • A light rain that arrives just as you sit outside with a beer

This keeps things exciting. Or humbling. Sometimes both.

The Upside: Green, Gorgeous, and Never Too Hot

Here’s the thing: while other parts of Spain are melting under 40°C heat, Asturias stays refreshingly temperate. Summers are comfortable, nights are cool, and air conditioning is more of a luxury than a necessity.

That mild climate is why the region looks like a postcard year-round. Rolling green hills, misty mountains, wildflowers, forests that look suspiciously enchanted—it’s all weather-powered magic.

Local Wisdom

Asturians have adapted beautifully. They dress in layers, complain about the rain (lovingly), and seize every sunny moment like it’s a limited-time offer. When the sun comes out, terraces fill instantly. Beaches appear crowded out of nowhere. Laundry is done at record speed.

There’s even a saying: “En Asturias, si no te gusta el tiempo, espera cinco minutos.” (In Asturias, if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.)

Final Forecast

The weather in Asturias may not be predictable, but it’s part of the charm. It keeps the landscape stunning, the air fresh, and life moving—rain or shine.

Bring good shoes, a solid umbrella (maybe two), and a flexible attitude. And if you leave your umbrella behind? Congratulations. You’re adapting already.
